One easy way to format a cross-reference is by using a character style such as Emphasis or Intense Emphasis. The benefit of this method is that you can later modify the style or find and replace the style with a different style. If a document has been edited, you will likely need to update the cross-references since cross-references do not update automatically.
It is important that the markers that are added at the beginning and end of the target of a cross-reference are not deleted or moved during editing. If they are, you will need to reinsert the cross-reference because you will receive an error when you update. Cross-references will also be updated when you switch to Print Preview or when you print if the Word option Update fields before printing is turned on.

Thanks for your thorough post. The only way I can see to do this is my inserting a link to each photo, which makes the text cumbersome. Thanks in advance!! So we want to automate word ending change when inserting cross-reference e. So is it possible to automate the word ending change of a figure caption when inserting it as a cross reference in a final sentence? Thank you for your answer!! I want to create a table in the appendix of my document which has rows showing Ref 1, Ref 2, Ref 3 and so on, each with the name of a document the reader can refer to.
The reason I want this is because everytime the document updates, I can simply click on update all fields and the ref numbers will update too…. I think you have tried to explain it above but it is unclear to me. My ref table is manual. I have a doc with numbered headings. I have inserted cross-references to those headings at later points in the text. However, if I go back and insert a new heading above any of the currently referenced headings, thus changing the heading numbers, the cross-references are not updated.
This shows the doc in print preview mode.
