If I know from the outset, that someone is a beginner in programming, I would focus in my answer on the algorithm for example, by providing an outline of the solution in pseudocode. If I know someone is a programmer, but doesn't know Perl, I can focus on different solutions how to solve a problem in Perl. Don't get me wrong: I don't mind helping learners even on a basic level.
